It was during this time that she met Martin Kowis and the two where married on Sept. 21, 1936, in Manning. The couple made their home in Killdeer where they raised their six children.

Betty stayed very busy raising the family and keeping her home. When most of the children where grown and had left the home, Betty began doing custodial work at the high school. She worked there until she was 82-years-old.

Betty lived at the home for a number of years before moving into Hilltop Home of Comfort in 2001.

Betty was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and attended regularly. She had a wonderful garden and always received many compliments on its produce. Betty also loved to bake, especially pastries and sweets. She was very fond of the time she spent visiting with her coffee friends every morning at the Buckskin.

She is survived by her son, Melvin, (Caroline) Kowis, Broomfield, Colo.; daughters, Luella Sandvick, Killdeer, Violet (Cooper) Wise, Mount Dora, Fla., Edna (Jim) Staudenmaier, Rockwood, Tenn., and Opal (Carl) Knocks, Spanish Lake, Mo.; one daughter-in-law, Marilyn Kowis, Athelstone, Wisc.; brothers, Dave Dietz, Harvey, August Dietz, Billings, Mont., and Lester (Eilene) Dietz, Piere, Idaho; sisters, Susie Schollmeyer, Dickinson, Mary Greenwalt, Portland, Ore., Sally Dietz, Colorado, and Annabell Dietz, Chicago; six grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by a son, Donald Kowis; five brothers, Walter, Ed, Fred, George and Paul; and a sister, Molly Batt.
