BISMARCK (AP) -- A Grand Forks cemetery may be let off the hook for a bill of more than $300,000.
The North Dakota Senate has approved legislation to exempt nonprofit cemeteries from special property assessments. The measure now goes to the House for its approval.
Grand Forks Sen. Connie Triplett says the bill shifts any assessment from a cemetery to all the city's property taxpayers.
Special assessments are used to finance construction of streets, sewers and other property improvements.
The cemetery was hit with assessments starting eight years ago to help pay for the cost of a flood protection project in Grand Forks.
