BISMARCK -- The Dickinson High boys track and field team fell victim to the Bismarck schools at the Kiwanis Invitational at the Bismarck Community Bowl on Thursday.
Bismarck High won five events and the meet with 178.5 team points despite second-place Minot (126) winning three events and third-place Bismarck Century (113.66) winning six. The Midgets didn't win any events and finished fourth with 86.33 points.
"We didn't go as hard and we also felt like we saw the effects of competing in two meets in three days," Dickinson coach Dave Michaelson said.
However, Dickinson's 800-meter relay team of Mitch Kudrna, Taylor Bruhschwein, Kelly Huffman and Skyler Beaudoin finished less than a second behind Bismarck to take second place and qualify for the Class A state meet with a time of 1 minutes, 32.14 seconds.
Dickinson's 400 relay team took fourth with a time of 44.58 but still easily qualified for state.

Kelly Huffman squeeked into the state meet with a second-place finish in the 300 hurdles. His 42.04 time is the cutoff for state-qualifying standards.
"Kelly's one of those kids who you're always pulling for," Michaelson said. "He works so hard. It's been fun to watch him grow into a really good leader as a senior."
Bismarck senior Rob Field beat Mitch Kudrna by more than a second in the 400, but the Dickinson senior still qualified for state with a 51.86.
Kudrna missed the state cut in the 100 by .04. He was sixth with an 11.48.
"He's very close to making the cut," Michaelson said. "His times are coming down. He needs a couple more weeks and I think he'll be just fine."
