BISMARCK - The Bismarck School Board has decided to begin classes after Labor Day next year and end them after Memorial Day.

The issue of when to begin the academic calendar has become a hot topic in North Dakota, where each school can set its own schedule. A group of parents who favor starting classes after Labor Day hope to bring to a public vote next year an initiated measure that would mandate a post-Labor Day start.

Supporters say that would give families more time to enjoy summer weather, and also boost tourism. Opponents say many students are participating in fall sports before Labor Day anyway, and a later start would push the end of the school year past Memorial Day.

Bismarck's 2014-15 school year will be Sept. 2 to June 4.
