A 29-year-old Dickinson man was arrested after he allegedly stole a vehicle and sent police on a low-speed chase around the city while his 2-year-old son was with him.

Valroy "Scott" Chase was charged with theft of a motor vehicle, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, endangerment of a child, preventing arrest and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police initially made contact with Chase Thursday morning while performing a welfare check after receiving a report of a man carrying a child wrapped in a T-shirt, DPD Capt. David Wilkie said Friday.

Wilkie said Chase was not committing any crimes on Thursday morning and the child he had with him was not endangered so police allowed him to leave.

Several hours later, a vehicle was reported stolen from the 1000 block of Enterprise Avenue. After officers located the vehicle, they attempted to make a traffic stop but Chase did not stop. Wilkie said the speeds of the chase were between 35 to 50 mph, but in the areas where Chase was going 50 mph the speed limit was 35 mph.

"This wasn't out of control ridiculous, but our officers stuck to the speed limit and attempted to make a stop on him, but he did not stop for us and continued on ward," he said.

Chase was later arrested in Dunn County. The 2-year-old was found safe.
