Buffalo gores woman in Black Hills

CUSTER, S.D. -- A 50-year-old Missouri woman was recovering in a Rapid City hospital this weekend after being gored by a buffalo in Custer State Park in the Black Hills.

CUSTER, S.D. -- A 50-year-old Missouri woman was recovering in a Rapid City hospital this weekend after being  gored by a buffalo in Custer State Park in the Black Hills.

The woman’s name was not released.

According to the Custer County emergency management, she was gored in the stomach by a 5-year-old bull.

She was lifeflighted to the Rapid City Regional Hospital.

The woman was gored while traveling on the 18-mile Wildlife Loop Road in the park where the approximate 1,300 bison in the park often stop traffic.  Some of the buffalo can weigh up to 2,000 pounds, says the park’s website.

The park and county officials urge people not to approach the animals and keep a safe distance.
