CASSELTON (AP) -- Officials in the southeastern North Dakota town of Casselton are discussing the possibility of a railroad quiet zone.
"Quiet zones" involve safety upgrades at street crossings so that trains do not have to blow their horns as they pass. Other cities such as Fargo and Jamestown have quiet zones or are developing them.
Casselton City Auditor Brandy Pyle says officials are still trying to come up with a plan, including how to pay for a quiet zone. They do not yet have a cost estimate.
Pyle says a public survey this summer indicated 64 percent of Casselton residents would approve of a half-cent tax to help pay for a quiet zone.
