Catherine Dutchuk was born Dec. 23, 1918 to Steve and Wasylen "Bella" (Dowhaniuk) Dutchuk. She grew up on the family farm near Gorham and attended a nearby country school through the eighth grade. While in school she worked on the farm herding the pigs and cattle. After school she worked as a housekeeper for families in the surrounding area. She met John Gawrylow and the two were married June 27, 1942 at St. Josephat's Ukrainian Catholic Church. After marriage they lived in Belfield while John worked on the Medora Bridge and Lehigh coal mine. Catherine cooked for the miners. They later purchased a farm in Billings County where they worked together until John's death. They made their home in Belfield from the 1960s until John's death in 1992, and Catherine continued to live in the same house until 2006.

She was a lifetime member of St. John's Ukrainian Catholic Church. She loved gardening her geraniums and wild roses. She also enjoyed canning, which she was famous for her dill pickles, crocheting, playing cards and entertaining family and friends.
