Funeral services for Cleon Engel, 78, of Dickinson, will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor Steve Tangen and Pastor Lisa Lewton officiating. Burial will be in the Dickinson Cemetery later this spring.
Visitation will be Monday, Feb. 23, from noon till 9 p.m. continuing on Tuesday, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Stevenson Funeral Home. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the Church.
Cleon passed away Friday, Feb. 20, 2009 at St. Joseph Hospital in Dickinson.
Cleon was born on April 20, 1930 the son of George A.W. and Adelhide (Pick) Engel in Waseca County, Minn. He grew up and attended school in New Richland, Minn. before being drafted in to the U.S. Marines. He served two years during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in Dec. of 1953. Cleon returned to the family farm in Minnesota where he farmed with his family. Cleon met and eventually married Laurine Kesting after a 12 year courtship. They were united in marriage on Oct. 22, 1962 in Pine City, Minn. Together they made their home in Dickinson where Cleon and his two brother-in-laws William and Arnold Kesting began farming. He also helped out with the Kesting Lumber Yard as well. Cleon and Laurine enjoyed putting in a large garden and shared their produce with many friends and neighbors. In Cleon's younger years he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a longtime member of the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church of Dickinson and a lifetime member of the American Legion.
Survivors include, his wife, Laurine, Dickinson; a step-daughter, Marge Odiorne and a step grandson, Charles Odiorne both of Lakewood, Colo.; two brothers, Gene (Darlene) Engel, Glenville, Minn. and Russell Engel, Freeborn, Minn.; three sisters, Donna Lou Kemmitts, Raddison, Wis., Beverly (Paul) Schmidt, Albert Lea, Minn. and Bonnie Engel, New Richland, Minn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
