ABERDEEN, S.D. — A Peever man has admitted he took tribal funds for personal use.
Jerome Renville, 42, pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of embezzlement and theft from a tribal organization, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Between January 2015 and March 2019, Renville embezzled, misapplied or permitted to be misapplied money, credits, goods, assets and other property belonging to the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate, according to court documents.
Renville was the supervisor of the tribe’s facilities maintenance for more than five years. While in that position, he used and converted tribal funds for personal gain.
Renville faces a maximum penalty of one year in federal prison and a $100,000 fine, according to a plea agreement in the case. He has agreed to pay $6,000 in restitution. He will be sentenced Dec. 13.
