GRAND FORKS — Grand Forks police have issued a warrant for the arrest of Vincent Chase Villarreal, 28, in relation to the murder of Jeffrey Allen Shulzitski, 55, in a Grand Forks motel last month.

Police confirmed in a news release Tuesday, Jan. 12, that Shulzitski died due to a gunshot wound.

Villarreal, who has been identified as Shulzitski's son, was charged with intentional murder with extreme indifference Tuesday. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole.

Villarreal is in custody at the Northwest Regional Corrections Center in Crookston, Minn., on unrelated charges.

Police were dispatched to the Budget Inn Express hotel in Grand Forks on Dec. 5, where they found Shulzitski, who appeared to have been killed in one of the rooms.

Court documents say that witness statements and video surveillance shows Villarreal arriving at the hotel room in the early afternoon of Dec. 4. While they were in the room, a firearm was discharged, striking Shulzitski. Documents say he died of his wounds sometime later.

A witness statement indicates that Villarreal fired the fatal shot, according to police. Video surveillance then shows Villarreal leaving the room.

Villarreal was identified by Grand Forks police as a person of interest days later along with Emanuel Garza, who is also in custody in Crookston on unrelated charges. Garza's involvement in the case remains unclear.
