CTICM (Retired) Michael David Olienyk, a true patriot who loved his country beyond belief, passed on March 23, 2009, while surrounded by family. He was born and raised in Belfield. After attending the College of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minn., he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, were he served for over 28 years. He spent considerable time at sea, serving on over 18 vessels, in waters spanning the globe. He was most fond of his service as a submariner. He retired as the Command Master Chief of the U.S. Naval Security Group, Ft. Meade, Md., on June 22, 1988. He was later employed at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville, Md. moved on as the program manager of the Vietnam War Memorial and the Korean War Memorial in Baltimore, Md. He also served at the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration. He is survived by his wife Margaret K. Olienyk, Crownsville, Md.; four children, James Olienyk, Annapolis, Md., Robin Sydnor, Middleburg, Fla., Michael T. Olienyk, Chugiak, Ark., Patrick Olienyk, Petersburg, Va.; five grandsons, RJ Robbins, Ricky Robbins, Aaron Robbins, Aurora, Colo., JD Olienyk, Joshua Olienyk, Annapolis, Md.; his father Mike Olienyk, Dickinson; and his siblings, Dr. John Olienyk, Ft. Collins, Colo., Kathy Wills, Minot, Loretta Waite, Towson, Md., Deborah Walker, Walnut Creek, Calif. Visitation with the family will occur on Friday, March 27, from noon until 1 p.m. at Our Lady of the Fields Catholic Church located at 1070 Cecil Avenue South, Millersville, followed by a funeral mass. An interment ceremony will follow at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville, Md. Michael was a silent giver to many causes. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to any charitable cause.
