The Czech community is celebrating its heritage with the annual Czech Day on Sunday, Sept. 23, at the Dickinson Eagles Club.

Entertainment is from 1-5 p.m., featuring the seven-piece Czech Heritage Band, the Czech Singers and accordionist Henry Kadrmas.

Dinner is served at 5 p.m., featuring chicken noodle soup, pigs-in-the-blanket, fried chicken, cole slaw, chicken hotdish, rice and giblets, mashed potatoes and kolache for dessert.

"It's a time for the Czechs to get together and celebrate their heritage," said event chairman Bob Dvorak.

The Czech Heritage Band is an extension of the Chuck Kadrmas Orchestra.

Chuck Kadrmas said the orchestra plays year-round with three or four musicians. The seven-piece band only comes together for special occasions such as Czech Day or wedding anniversaries.

"We play more Czech music than other bands," he said. "We try to throw in a few Glenn Miller tunes because we have the orchestration for it."

The band members are Keith, Chuck, Edwin and Vince Kadrmas, Galen Hibl, Joe Kralicek and Clarion Kubas.

Kadrmas said the band's instruments include clarinets, trumpets, a sousaphone, accordion and drums.

"That's the way they used to play it. In fact, we have real old music that was ordered in the 40s. We do write some of own music," he said.

You don't have to be of Czech heritage to enjoy the afternoon. Last year, guests came from North Dakota, Montana and Wisconsin.

"Anybody can come and celebrate with us," said Dvorak.

Tickets are available at the door.
