A man has been charged in a November assault that resulted in a severe head injury and partial paralysis of a 2-year-old child, according to court documents.

Austin Lee Thorsteinson, 24, has been charged with abuse of a child, a Class A felony, for an assault prosecutors say took place Nov. 22.

According to the criminal complaint, Thorsteinson stuck the child’s head against a stereo speaker and a metal table. The complaint states Thorsteinson admitted to striking the child because he was angry.

The child was hospitalized in Sanford Children’s Hospital in Fargo with a severe head injury, according to the complaint. The child suffered two spots of bleeding in his brain and needed emergency surgery. The child has regained consciousness but shows signs of paralysis on his left side, prosecutors say.

The case was investigated by the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation. He is currently being held in Devils Lake on a $20,000 cash bond.
