A Dickinson woman was the target of a lottery scam Tuesday claiming she had won $45 million, according to the Dickinson Police Department.
Alicia Walla of Dell Avenue received a call from someone who identified themselves as New Jersey police officers stating she had won the lottery and she needed to send a check for the taxes on the winnings to them, Capt. David Wilkie said. The earnings would then be deposited into her bank account.
He added the call was odd since the "police" said she won so much money, adding people usually don't have enough money in their bank account to cover taxes for $45 million.
Walla did not send a check to the callers, Wilkie said. Since it crosses jurisdictional lines, the department reported it to the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Internet Crime Complaint Center.
