Dickinson's boys tennis team beats Minot 5-4

A little bit of rain and some cold early morning conditions didn't stop the Dickinson High boys tennis team from beating Minot High 5-4 on Saturday.

A little bit of rain and some cold early morning conditions didn't stop the Dickinson High boys tennis team from beating Minot High 5-4 on Saturday.

The win - only Dickinson's second all-time victory over Minot - earned the Midgets the No. 3 seed in the West Region tournament and will face Mandan on Thursday.

"It was pretty intense," Dickinson coach Clayton Johnsen said.

The teams split the six singles matches and it was up to the Midgets' No. 2 and 3 doubles teams to stake Dickinson to a victory after falling behind 4-3.

Jess Friedt and Luke Van Ells defeated Trey Welstadt and Skylar Kjos, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 in No. 2 doubles

The No. 3 doubles team of Collin Petersen and Shawn Senescall clinched Dickinson's victory with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 win.

"The bottom half of our kids pulled through," Johnsen said. "I'm very proud of them."

The matches needed to be moved to the Dickinson State courts after a one-hour rain delay at the high school courts, which wouldn't dry.
