Dunn County Sheriff Larry Boepple has encountered one of the strangest investigations during his tenure.
One male has been identified in allegedly shooting a calf, dragging it to a farmstead and skinning it, and charges are possible against a second individual.
Dustin Wolf, 31, Dodge, is being held at the Southwest Multi-County Correctional Center in Dickinson on charges of mistreating animals, criminal conspiracy and theft.
"It is one of the weirder ones," Boepple said.
Wolf allegedly was involved in shooting the calf Sept. 16 about three to four miles northeast of Dodge. Law enforcement was called out at about 8:25 a.m. that day. The calf belonged to Rodney Stein of Halliday.

"The owner of the calf had been driving by the county road and saw his calf had been shot," Boepple said. "When he came back it was gone."
The calf was dragged to a farmstead about a mile from where it was shot. Wolf allegedly was in the process of skinning it before getting scared off by some people who were pulling into the farmstead.
Stein called the sheriff's department when he found his dead calf missing.
"In the process, we found where it was at and who did it," Boepple said.
A court date has not been set for Wolf.
