Like a hibernating animal preparing its den, the downtown Dickinson Wells Fargo building is getting geared up for the impending cold season.
The building sustained severe water and smoke damage during the historic downtown Elks building fire in October.
Within the next 10 days, Wells Fargo Bank President Daryl Tabor said the cleanup and removal of debris would be completed at the downtown location. After that, the building will be winterized, with no work being completed throughout the cold season.
"During the winter, we'll put together all our assessments of the numbers," Tabor said.
He said the reconstruction would begin in March of next year.
"With the cold coming on so fast and the water lines, trying to bring in temporary power, we thought it'd be easier," Tabor said.
Tabor said he anticipated work to continue for about six months once construction gets under way in March.
"(The damage) was very similar to what our environmental team assessed," Tabor said. "Everything is gutted in the bank."
He said once they got down to the bare structure of the building, they determined it to be safe.
"They've done an excellent job of running the process," Tabor said.
Horsley Specialties has been leading the cleanup process. Tabor said the construction company works for all Wells Fargo offices across the country.
"Then, when we start the renovation, that will be when we put out bids and use everyone we can from a local basis," Tabor said.
Until the downtown location is reopened, the Prairie Hills Mall location will be expanded to offer assistance to all customers.
"We have our tentative open date for the public on Dec. 17," Tabor said.
He said the new location is across from K-Mart, where Big Sky Athlete used to be located.
"They're putting the carpet in (Friday), and it's moving along quickly," Tabor said.
Tabor said for customers who want to access their safe deposit boxes, they can do that beginning Dec. 5.
"Until we actually have offices (at the new site), we will still be able to help people," Tabor said.
Tabor said both drive-up lanes located in the Prairie Hills Mall parking lot are open. Drive-up hours at that location have been extended to 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.
