Sara Fitzsimmons, owner of Salon 21 by Sara, plays with fellow stylist Michelle Herrmann’s hair at the Dickinson salon on April 3. Fitzsimmons was a stylist for years before leaving the business while dreaming of owning her own salon. On April 1, that dream came true when Salon 21 opened in north Dickinson.

Starting the day with good hair makes everything else fall into place.
It’s something that Salon 21 by Sara owner Sara Fitzsimmons hopes to help clients with, not only after they step out of the beauty parlor, but every day.
“Coming here, it’s a beautiful place, so you feel like you’re going to get beautiful,” Fitzsimmons said.
Fitzsimmons rented a booth at a salon for three and a half years, moved to Florida for six months, moved back and began working at a salon again.
But she didn’t like working for someone else. She tried a few other things but didn’t have the same passion as she did for hair dressing.
“I knew that I would only go back to the salon if I could own my own salon,” Fitzsimmons said. “I’ve always wanted to find a really nice place to work.”
She wanted the salon to feel high end without the high-end pricing.
“That was my passion, and I didn’t know I would ever be able to do that, so I kind of put that idea on the back burner,” Fitzsimmons said.
Fitzsimmons approached a friend that owned the space inside the North Hills Mall on 21st Street West in north Dickinson where Salon 21 is located, and a dream soon began to become a reality.
Remodeling began in November and the salon opened April 1.
“It’s all custom-made,” Fitzsimmons said of the decor. “I just wanted it to look very elegant - modern, yet elegant.”
Each styling station features a miniature chandelier above a classic stylist’s chair in a burnt orange that adds a modern flair.
Rather than going with industry trends and opening a booth rental beauty parlor, Salon 21 runs on a commission-based model, adding another element to the old-school charm she’s trying to accomplish.
The salon carries three lines from TIGI - Bed Head, Catwalk, and S Factor - and uses TIGI colot. The stylists have received all their continuing education through TIGI, Fitzsimmons said. It will carry the company’s makeup line as well.
“We know the product in and out,” Fitzsimmons said.
In addition to offering hair services like cuts, color and styling, facials and waxing services, Salon 21 will offer styling classes to teach clients the latest trends to try at home.
One of her stylists, Michelle Herrmann, was a teacher at a beauty school in Fargo before moving to Dickinson with her boyfriend.
“We have in-house education as well,” Fitzsimmons said.
