NORTHWOOD -- A man has been charged with drunken driving after police say he crashed into a fire hydrant and knocked out water service in Northwood on Thursday morning.

A car driven by Kurt Johnson, 49, Northwood, crashed into a fire hydrant on the 400 block of Great Northern Road about 2 a.m, Northwood Police Chief Stan Baker said.

“He took out the fire hydrant,” he said.

Residents in many parts of the city of about 1,000 people in Grand Forks County reported little water pressure, according to Dave Belling, public works superintendent.

“When he hit it, it drained our water tower,” he said Thursday morning. “We haven’t been able to isolate it, because of ice. Hopefully soon, we’ll have water to the school and the nursing home.”

The vehicle, a 1997 Buick Park Avenue, was demolished, Baker said.

Johnson was charged with driving under the influence and taken to Grand Forks County Correctional Center.

Northwood Public School classes were delayed while crews worked to fix the problem.
