ST. LOUIS -- Pete Stanton sure didn't expect the Dickinson State men's distance relay team to come up this big.

The 3,200-meter relay team of Ryley McPeters, Robert Hernandez, Wilson Barmasia and Sergio Jimenez clocked a school-record time of 7:35.69 to take fourth at the NAIA National Championships on Friday.

"That was a big shot in the arm for us," Stanton said. "It's as outstanding of a relay race as one of our teams has run in a long time."

Today is expected to be hectic for the Blue Hawks, but several placers grabbed crucial points that could help the team set up a run at the national title.

Dominic Goodman got in solid leaps in the long jump and finished fourth at 23 feet, 4½ inches. Goodman attempts to defend his national title in the triple jump today.

"He just continues to show what a clutch performer he is," Stanton said. "We just hope he has one more in him in the triple jump."

Sheldon King had a leap of 6-9 to take seventh in the high jump. He fell six inches short of winner Michael Mason's leap of 7-3.

Michael Sands entered with one of the top times in the nation in the 100 but finished eighth with a run of 10.76. Tyrell Cuffy of King College won the race in 10.33.

On the women's side, Chadee Moss collected one team point by placing eighth in the triple jump. She had a leap of 38-3¼.

The men's 1,600 relay team showed its power, finishing second in the preliminaries with a time of 3:13.57. Doane has the top time of 3:12.40.

Meanwhile, the men's 400 relay team is in first after the preliminaries with a time of 40.37.

Ramon Miller and Sean Pickstock finished first and third, respectively, in the 400 open. Miller ran a 46.47 while Pickstock finished in 47.19.

Miller, Pickstock and their performances in the relay teams are cruical to DSU's success today.

Stanton expects the team to be in a three-way battle for the title with 2007 national champion Oklahoma Baptist and Asuza Pacific.

"If we take care of our business, we're going to be right in the thick of things," Stanton said. "We just have to come out and perform very well. I really like how focused we are."
