DSU has strong day at BHSU

SPEARFISH, S.D. -- While the Dickinson State track and field team had a solid outing on a beautiful Saturday at Black Hills State at the ironically titled Frostbite Invitational, coach Pete Stanton still eyed the negative - and with good reason.

SPEARFISH, S.D. -- While the Dickinson State track and field team had a solid outing on a beautiful Saturday at Black Hills State at the ironically titled Frostbite Invitational, coach Pete Stanton still eyed the negative - and with good reason.

"You could definitely see the effects of the first meet outdoors," Stanton said.

The Blue Hawks haven't been to an outdoor meet this season and haven't run in a meet since the NAIA national indoor championships on March 10.

"I thought we would compete better than we did," Stanton said.

Dominic Goodman won the long jump. Goodman and Mike Thompson finished first and second in the triple jump. Both qualified for nationals.

Ramon Miller won the 400 with a time of 47.75 seconds.

John Kungu won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:21.41.

Kevin McElvaney won the discus with a throw of 52Zc meters. Jeremy Herr took top honors in the javelin with a toss of 53½ meters. Shayne Hinz was second with a 49Xc throw.

On the women's side, pole vaulter Kelsey Aide qualified for the national meet with a jump of 11 feet, 7 inches.

Rose Jepkiori also qualified in the 5,000 with a time of 18:07. She finished second.

Keneisha Miller won both the 200 (25.49) and 400 (59.44) but didn't qualify for nationals.

"We need to compete better this week to get ourselves in outdoor shape," Stanton said. "We've got to make some big strides in that area."
