MANNING -- Dunn County has declared a fire emergency and instituted a burn ban due to dry conditions.
Glenn Eckelberg, chair of the county commission, signed the ban Wednesday. It prohibits fireworks, garbage burning, campfires, burning of farm or crop land and unnecessary off-road motorized travel when the North Dakota Rangeland Fire Index is in the high, very high or extreme category. The index can be found at www.crh.noaa.gov/bis/?n=fire_weather_public .
The prohibitions also apply if a Red Flag Warning has been issued for the county.
County emergency manager Denise Brew said the ban encourages people to check the index daily before doing any of the activities that would be prohibited.
Violators of the ban are guilty of a class B misdemeanor, which carries a maximum penalty of 30 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.
