Elite Cabinets offers local home improvement one-stop shop

Elite Cabinets and Design has been expanding since it opened two and a half years ago, increasing storage and product in an effort to be the area's one-stop shop for home improvement and repair.

"Our goal is to almost be like a one-stop shop, like a home center so we can get flooring, cabinets, countertops, blinds, lumber, siding - pretty much everything from the ground up on whatever you build," owner Josh Anderson said.

Anderson said the business had been a goal of his for about 10 years because of the lack of access to materials in the area.

"We struggled with a lot of stuff, getting it here," he said. "It may not seem like it to a lot of people, but we are pretty remote.... Here it's a lot harder to get stuff faster. You can't just go downtown and buy it at Lowe's."

Anderson hopes that by providing everything locally, it will take some of the headache out of remodeling for locals.

"That way you can do everything in one spot instead of going five different places and looking for stuff," he said.

To achieve this goal, Anderson is adding a 3,600 square-foot hardware store with a custom paint department sandwiched between Elite's two current buildings.

"It's going to be a Do It Best franchise, so we'll have everything from plumbing, electrical, tools ... like you're walking into Ace Hardware in Dickinson," he said. "It'll be a variety of everything."

While it is much smaller than its corporate one-stop competitors, it is local and provides the kind of full service they don't.

"Part of the custom part of (our business) is with Lowe's, with Menards, with these other places, they won't go to the job site and actually measure up the kitchen," Anderson said. "They won't measure up the windows. You have to bring the size to them. We'll do it and take care of everything so nothing ever gets screwed up. If it is screwed up, then it's our fault."

Elite has a showroom and multiple displays for its products.

"The showroom's really what kicked it off cause that was kind of our guinea pig, to see what people thought. People love it. ... If they can see it, more people will buy it. It's better than looking at it in a paper or a magazine," Anderson said.

With all the materials on display, it makes it easier for salesman and designer Kelly Luderman to help the customer envision their project. He can help them pick out everything from flooring to cabinets, from fixtures to tiles.

"I think probably the No. 1 thing that I've learned ... is customer service and callbacks is probably the biggest thing ever for people that keeps them happy. ... Today's world, the service industry stinks. You can't find anybody to help you anymore," Anderson said.

If there's a service they don't currently provide and a customer mentions it to them, he said they will find a way to figure out how to do it.

"Just the other day, people have been having problems with their sewers freezing up cause of the cold weather here," Anderson said. "So we did a bunch of research and we (looked) into this company where they have this special heat tape that they've been putting in all these sewers out in Canada, and we brought them in. We've already sold like a ton of them."
