WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Bowman industrial park is now another step closer to reality after the Federal Aviation Administration released the land at the city's old airport.

U.S. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D. announced earlier this week that the FAA has released the land where the former Bowman Municipal Airport was located. Bowman's new airport opened in May 2015 at a new location.

Teran Doerr, the executive director of the Bowman County Development Corporation, said the release of the land will allow developers to move forward with an industrial park in Bowman that is planned for the former airport site.

"We're really excited about it," Doerr said. "That's something we've been waiting on for quite a while, so we were really excited to get that news."

Doerr said although they have been waiting for about a year for the release to happen, it has allowed them extra time to make sure all the proper steps were taken to get the project going.

"We were hoping for it last year so we could make the construction season, that wasn't able to happen," she said. "But (the delay) has allowed us to work on the zoning for the property and really get it to where we want and to work with the public on what they want to see out there."

Doerr said county officials are continuing to work on the zoning of the property. She said they hope to go to bid on infrastructure for the first phase of the project early this summer.

"We are excited about the release because it puts us one step closer to being able to develop the land," she said. "... We've already had some inquiries about the property, which is very encouraging. We think it'll be great for the long term of our community."

According to a press release, Heitkamp has been working closely with Bowman officials to get the FAA to release the land. If the land was not released before the summer, it would have complicated the process of bidding out infrastructure for the industrial park that is slated to replace the former airport.

"This decision is long overdue, and it's a needed step that FAA finally took action - as I pushed for alongside Bowman officials," Heitkamp said the release. "Bowman's new airport is an asset for the community, supporting local jobs and economic development, and the FAA finally agreeing to release the land where the old airport was situated will help Bowman thrive."
