Board denies request for cattle exemptions

BISMARCK -- The North Dakota State Board of Animal Health has turned down a request to allow Canadian cattle to enter the state without testing.

Meeting Thursday in Bismarck, the board voted unanimously to deny a request by Korbyn Kost of Carrington, to exempt cattle he wants to import from Canada from the state's tuberculosis and brucellosis testing and brucellosis vaccination requirements.

Kost operates a feedlot near Carrington.

Shawn Schafer, Turtle Lake, who represents the non-traditional livestock industry on the nine-member board, moved to deny the request. Melvin Leland, Sydney, Mont., who represents purebred cattle, seconded the motion.

BISMARCK (AP) -- American Indian tribes in North Dakota are getting some of the $4.5 million in federal stimulus money being awarded nationwide to boost food assistance to low-income families on and near reservations.

The Agriculture Department says the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe is getting $350,000 and the Spirit Lake Sioux about $6,000.

The money is for the purchase of equipment and the improvement of facilities needed to provide food aid to needy families on and near the reservations.
