The smell of smoke clung to the cold Tuesday morning air as Dickinson Fire Department personnel responded to a residential apartment fire on Dickinson’s northwest side.
According to department personnel, the fire began in the late hours but was handled quickly due to the quick responsive action of tenants and firefighters — being extinguished shortly after their arrival at the scene.
The fire occurred on the back patio of an apartment complex on Sierra Commons Road in northwest Dickinson. The Dickinson Fire Department responded to the call at 11:45 p.m., Dickinson Fire Chief Jeremy Presnell said.
"Due to swift action by a tenant and the Dickinson Fire Department, there were no injuries or serious structural damage reported," he said.
According to the department, one of the adjacent tenants at the apartment complex smelled the smoke and used a fire extinguisher to help tame the fire until the Dickinson Fire Department could arrive shortly thereafter. Presnell added that the apartment sprinkler system was activated and also helped calm the blaze.
First responders were on scene for about 5 minutes before the fire was extinguished.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and is still under investigation by the Dickinson Fire Department, Presnell added.
