Billowing clouds of smoke blanketed the night sky, as significant flames ignited a residential home and sent fire crews from the South Heart Fire Department to the scene. The Dickinson Rural Fire Department, Belfield Ambulance Service and the Stark County Road Department provided mutual aid to South Heart as first responders battled throughout the night to save the single family residence.

The home, located in South Heart just south of Interstate-94 and north of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Co. tracks; was declared a total loss by fire service personnel on Saturday evening, with authorities declining to provide additional information as the incident remains under investigation.

South Heart Fire Chief Jesse Olson noted in an interview with The Press on Monday that there are multiple investigations with entities from Stark County and the North Dakota State Fire Marshal’s Office, each attempting to ascertain the cause of the fire. Olson added that due to the circumstances of the situation and the nature of this family-sensitive case, no additional information is being made to the public at this time.

The South Heart Fire Department posted on its Facebook page on Sunday morning regarding this incident, stating, “... When we arrived on scene it was fully engulfed. Thankfully, everyone made it out in time and is safe… Please keep this family in your prayers as they go through this rough time.”
