The "Friends of the Library" organization has a unique incentive for making a donation to support its work.
When a person donates $25 or more, the individual may pick out a handmade knit scarf and receive a 2008 membership.
"Friends of the Library" raises funds to help purchase items for the Dickinson Area Public Library. The majority of the money comes from the used book store "Twice Sold Tales," which is located south of the library.
Since organizing in 1984, Friends has donated over $200,000 to the library. The most recent donation was $20,000 toward construction of the Friends Plaza. The scarf promotion was initiated during the library's recent grand opening.
"The response has been wonderful. Many people made donations during our grand opening," said board Treasurer Bobbi Miller.

Miller has been knitting the scarves since last winter in anticipation of the grand opening. The display is currently at the public library.
Board member Lisa Kostelecky said the scarf promotion is an opportunity to create interest in "Friends of the Library."
"There's lots of opportunities for volunteering with the book store. It's a volunteer-driven organization, mostly to support the library and to give back to the community," she said.
If volunteering isn't an option, a membership still demonstrates support of the library.
Kostelecky's role is to create a positive image of the organization and library through her job as newsletter editor.
"That's been very easy with how the library addition has turned out," she said.
She encourages avid readers to donate their books for resale in the book store.
