WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump announced his intent Tuesday, March 6, to nominate Dallas Carlson as the U.S. marshal for the district of North Dakota.

In a statement, Carlson said he was “very honored and humbled to be nominated.” “I am looking forward to the confirmation process in the coming weeks,” he said.

Carlson has been with the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation for 29 years, starting as a special agent, then chief agent, and now as the director since 2011. Before that, he worked for the Devils Lake and Mandan police departments and the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office.  He is a Warwick native.

Carlson’s nomination requires confirmation from the U.S. Senate.

Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D., issued a statement Tuesday, saying that he supports Carlson’s nomination.

Sen. Heidi Heitkamp also has offered her support.

“Dallas has been an excellent director for BCI and given his experience and my first-hand knowledge of his skill-set – he was my first choice for this job, and I advocated fiercely for his nomination,” Heitkamp said..

Daniel Orr is currently North Dakota’s acting U.S. marshal. Duties of the U.S. marshal include protecting the federal judiciary, apprehending federal fugitives, managing seized assets, housing and transporting federal prisoners and operating the Witness Security Program.
