Hazen beats Trinity

HAZEN -- Brian Sorenson's two second-quarter touchdown runs, combined with Dickinson Trinity's fumble problems led to Hazen's Class AA, West Region victory on Friday night.

Sorensen rushed for 135 yards and Trinity fumbled four times to help Hazen secure a 20-7 win at the Bison Athletic Complex.

"We just gave them the ball too much," Trinity coach Randy Gordon said. "We laid it on the ground too much."

The win placed fourth-ranked Hazen (5-1, 3-1 West) in a strong position to clinch the West Region's second seed for the playoffs, which would ensure the Bison at least one home postseason game.

"We try not to focus on stuff like that," Bison coach Rick Philion said. "We always know that there's a chance of playing them again sometime."

Sorenson scored on runs of 15 and 60 yards in the second quarter.

Trinity (3-3, 2-2 West) took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter after junior quarterback Brooks Thorson found senior Marcus Sickler for a 3-yard touchdown pass.

"(Sickler) is our go-to guy," Gordon said.

Gordon said Hazen's ability to maintain possession in the third quarter dashed Trinity's hopes.

"It got to be, as the game went on, when we couldn't get the ball back, the kids got a little frustrated and we let up," Gordon said.
