McGREGOR, N.D. – The North Dakota Department of Health is monitoring a 200-barrel spill that occurred at an oil well about 4 miles southeast of here.
The spill released flowback water, which is a combination of produced water and fluid used for hydraulic fracturing. The initial report indicates that about 100 barrels remained on site and about 100 barrels got off the location, said Dennis Fewless, director of the Division of Water Quality. A barrel is 42 gallons.
Some of the fluid is believed to have reached a small slough that is frozen over, Fewless said. Health department inspectors will be on site to monitor the cleanup.
The release was reported by Petro-Hunt. The company has contained the release and is in the process of cleaning it up, the health department said.
