Randy Wolfgram was looking for more variety in the food selection in Belfield and decided to fill in the gaps. He and Kodi Koenig opened Daddy's Diner Sept. 26.

"I was driving to Dickinson to eat," Wolfgram said.

The diner serves home-cooked food for every meal of the day, Koenig said.

"I think it's stuff that everybody likes," Wolfgram said.

The building was a Baptist church that had sat empty for a few months, Koenig said. They began remodeling in May.

Meals at Daddy's Diner range from burgers and hotdogs to steak and shrimp, she added.

"We also have some diner-style food, like chili cheese fries, super nachos -- all that kind of stuff," Koenig said. "We've got a little bit of everything on our menu."

Customers are coming for the made-from-scratch dishes, she added.

"I start out in the morning making sausage gravy from scratch, making homemade mashed potatoes -- all that kind of stuff is made here, it doesn't come in off the food truck," Koenig said.

The portions are generous, she said.

"I think the thing that is getting the most talk is the size of the portions," Koenig said. "We have huge portions and we've got the prices set really low."

The Philly steak sandwich is one of the most popular menu items, Wolfgram said. Another favorite is the Big Daddy Burger, which features a half-pound burger with bacon between two grilled cheese sandwiches.

One of his favorite features is the two soups a day with a full salad bar.

The name of the restaurant started as a nickname, Koenig said.

"My daughter calls Randy Big Daddy," she said. "Initially it was going to be Big Daddy's Diner and we just didn't care for that so it just became Daddy's Diner."

Wolfgram said the name is a tribute to his father as well.

"He liked to cook a lot," Wolfgram said. "He never had a restaurant or anything but he fed everyone around this area."

Wolfgram owns and continues to operate Mike's Bar in Belfield as well. Koenig was waitressing at another restaurant, but now manages Daddy's Diner.

"We just wanted to add some variety in town and we wanted to do something that was a little more friendly to the locals, price wise," Koenig said.

Daddy's Diner is located at 128 Main St. N. in Belfield. It's open Monday through Saturday 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
