FARGO -- Rep. Kim Koppelman, R-West Fargo, announced Wednesday that he would not seek the Republican endorsement this year to challenge Rep. Earl Pomeroy, D-N.D.
Koppelman, who has served 13 years in the North Dakota House, said he could best serve his state and community by continuing to serve as a state legislator and as chairman of the Council of State Governments, a national organization representing all three branches of government in all 50 states.
"I feel this is the best work I can do for the people of our state and the people of our community right now," Koppelman said in a news conference.
The 51-year-old advertising executive said he had been encouraged by many influential Republicans to try to unseat Pomeroy, first elected to the U.S. House in 1992, and had been rumored to be a likely candidate, but decided not to enter the race.
So far, no Republican candidates have announced their candidacy for North Dakota's lone U.S. House seat.
