MANDAN -- A solid performance by Dickinson High senior Lynn Messer helped the Midgets volleyball team to a 25-19, 25-17, 25-16, 25-19 win over Mandan on Thursday in West Region action.

Messer had 16 kills and 13 digs to lead the Midgets, who bounced back from a Game 2 loss to close out the match.

"She was accurate and aggressive," Dickinson coach Jay Schobinger said. "We (had) one rotation where she hit on the outside and had a few kills, but most of her damage was done in the middle."

According to Schobinger, the loss in Game 2 wasn't a big deal.

"We had one little lapse in Game 2," Schobinger said. "We had some communication problems, but other than that, I thought our girls played extremely well."

Dickinson senior Shaunda Dvorak also reached double-digit kills with 10 and added six blocks. Setter Whitley Abrahamson had 37 assists and 19 digs.

Mandan was paced by Dani Schmautz's 14 kills. Kathryn Neubauer had 22 digs.

The win keeps the Midgets in third place in the West Region and puts a dangerous team behind them.

Mandan, in sixth place, has quality wins over Minot and Bismarck Century.

"They're a scare team," Schobinger said of Mandan. "They have one of the best hitters in the conference in Dani Schmautz."

Dickinson is at home tonight against Jamestown in another West Region match.

The game is at 5:30 p.m., which is before the two schools meet in the regular-season football finale at 7 p.m. at Whitney Stadium.
