MINOT (AP) -- The city of Minot is backing a controversial request by housing developers who want to apply to the state for federal tax credits.

The Minot Daily News reports that the City Council has voted to support Community Development Inc. The Idaho-based nonprofit is proposing a low-income housing project in Minot.

Supporters say the city needs more housing. Some neighbors of the proposed site say it isn't a good fit, and they fear traffic congestion, crime and lower property values.

City Attorney John Van Grinsven says the area is properly zoned for apartments. The council voted 10-3 to direct the mayor to write a letter of support.
