MINOT (AP) -- It may have looked like Christmas outside, but Ward Nostdahl says it wasn't Santa's reindeer he heard clomping on his roof.

Nostdahl called police to report a moose on the roof of his hillside home northwest of Minot.

"Initially, when we got there, it was in his driveway. It ran to the neighbor's house and we chased it from there," Game Warden Alan Howard said.

Nostdahl called Howard back after the moose returned and went to the roof.

"You could see its tracks," Howard said.

Nostdahl's earth house is built into a hill, making it easy for the young moose to get up on the roof, the warden said. The animal had come down by the time Howard got there. He said it headed north.

Wandering moose are not unusual, Howard said, "but not on the roof."

Nostdahl said he worried about the impact on his house, though he had not been out back to check.

"The snow is so deep and I'm 87 years old. I don't get through the snow too good," Nostdahl said.
