BISMARCK (AP) -- North Dakota auto dealers have submitted just under $9 million in Cash for Clunkers rebate requests to the federal government.
The $3 billion federal program was designed to jump-start the auto industry and get gas guzzlers off the road. Car owners who traded in older, less fuel-efficient vehicles got $3,500 or $4,500 in rebates.
The U.S. Department of Transportation says dealers submitted $2.88 billion in reimbursements. State totals ranged from $326.8 million in California to $2.5 million in Wyoming.
