FARGO, N.D. (AP) -- The North Dakota National Guard says a soldier wounded while serving in Iraq is receiving the Purple Heart on Friday.
KFGO radio reports that Sgt. Michael Wing of Surrey was wounded while serving as a team leader in Iraq with the 141st Engineer Battalion. Wing was the vehicle gunner on a mission to clear improvised explosive devices when an IED exploded just a few feet in front of him.
Wing was treated and returned to missions the next day.
The Guard says Wing is also receiving a Combat Action Badge for his actions in repelling insurgents who attacked his convoy with small arms and rocket propelled grenades.
The incidents happened while he was deployed in 2004.
