BISMARCK (AP) -- Some lawmakers say North Dakota should be doing more to help the state's wine industry.

The state Senate has narrowly approved a bill that would create a grape and wine program fund to help with research and marketing. The measure will go to the House for more work.

Supporters of the bill say North Dakota is behind other states in developing an industry that's good for business and tourism. They say more research is needed on growing grapes in the region.

Opponents say it's not a high priority and the industry should be looking for money from other sources. The bill passed the Senate 24-22.

It proposes to raise the money from a tax on wine.
