FARGO -- North Dakota State University President Joseph A. Chapman sent in his letter of resignation today, according to a press release from the university.
"Controversies in recent days have created distractions that have made it impossible for me to provide the leadership this institution deserves. Students have always been paramount, and I fear these distractions have impaired my ability to serve their interests," he wrote in the letter of resignation.
Chapman, who has been at the center of controversy over the cost of his new home and a trip to Washington, D.C., says he is resigning Jan. 2.
He told The Associated Press: "I have been thinking about this for a while. Given all the stuff that is going on, for the institution and especially for the students, the people who really matter in all this, it's just time to do something else."
Chapman added, "It just isn't fun."
