Odyssey Theaters and Dickinson State University are bringing a new two-screen theater to the DSU campus.

The theater, in the DSU student center, will be open to the public, and should be ready by the end of December, Steven L. Tripp, Odyssey president, said.

"When we were up there, we developed a great relationship with the fine folks at DSU," Tripp said. "It was a joint idea between both entities that they felt it was great for their student center and their campus area, and they're thrilled to bring more of the public onto campus."

Odyssey is readying an eight-screen theater, the Dakota Grand, for construction this spring on Second Street East, across from Dickinson City Hall.

Odyssey previously had a three-screen theater in Prairie Hills Mall.

In 2017, they requested that their lease be amended to end September 2018, in anticipation of the new eight-screen theater.

The arrangement with DSU and logistics to create the theater only took 60 days to complete, Tripp said.

"We felt it was great to keep our presence in the market with a twin theater over there," he said. "We've got a lot of customers who have asked for something of this magnitude and so we said let's do it."

The new theater will be a welcome addition to the DSU campus, Marie Moe, DSU executive director of communications and public affairs, said.

"We're excited to be working with Odyssey Theaters to make this opportunity available not just for our students, faculty and staff, but for the larger community," Moe said.

The two auditoriums will feature stadium seating, with reclining luxury lounger chairs.

Construction has already begun.

"They're actually over there working currently," Tripp said. "They will start putting in the sound walls Monday, I believe. That should only take about five or six days."

Work on the new eight-screen theater, a $3.5 million project, is coming along "very well," Tripp said, with construction starting this spring.

"Obviously, construction in the winter in Dickinson is not the greatest. You've got pretty adverse weather," he said. "It will go in the ground in the early spring, as soon as they can get in the ground, and should be done by the end of the summer."

Tripp said he is excited about the new two-screen theater.

"We never wanted to be out of the market while we're waiting for the new Dakota Grand to open," he said. "This fills that void, allows people to use the buckets they've purchased when we were operating in the mall, their gift cards, and things like that."
