BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -- North Dakota wildlife officials have finished the latest round of deer sampling without finding any more cases of chronic wasting disease.
A hunter-shot mule deer doe killed last fall in Grant County tested positive for CWD, the third case in state history. But Game and Fish Department wildlife veterinarian Dan Grove says all other samples have tested negative.
More than 2,500 samples from 2011 were sent to a lab at Michigan State University. Since sampling efforts started in 2002, more than 22,000 deer, elk and moose have tested negative for CWD.
Chronic wasting is a fatal disease in members of the deer family. North Dakota had been somewhat of an island when it came to CWD until the first case in 2009. A second deer tested positive the following year.
