BISMARCK (AP) -- North Dakota lawmakers are considering a proposal that gives nursing mothers the right to breast-feed their children in public.
The bill says employers cannot penalize new mothers who breast-feed their children or pump breast milk at work.
The Senate's Human Services Committee is examining the bill. The full Senate will vote on the measure later.
Bismarck pediatrician Joan Connell says the state should promote breast-feeding of children because mother's milk is good for their development.
She says many women stop breast-feeding their children when they return to work because they don't feel comfortable doing it at work.

The proposal allows employers to call themselves "infant friendly" if they meet a set of standards meant to help make new mothers comfortable when they breast-feed their children.
