DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- A Council Bluffs, Iowa, official says the owner of a dog that was stabbed to death as it attacked a 77-year-old woman will be cited for having a dog at large.

Assistant City Attorney Don Bow-ermeister said Tuesday that Courtney Mahler, of Council Bluffs, will be ticketed for allowing her American bulldog to run loose. The offense carries a $40 fine.

Bowermeister says the owner can't be cited for having a dangerous or vicious dog because the animal is dead.

Ann Lyon was with her miniature Doberman pinscher Sunday when she was attacked by the bulldog. A man driving by stopped and stabbed the bulldog with his pocketknife.

Officials say the dog was licensed and had caused no earlier problems.
