The Dickinson Park Board is stepping toward action in tackling the vandalism at the skate park in south Dickinson.

During a roundtable meeting Friday morning, the board decided to invite public input at its May 14 meeting to determine the fate of the Eagles Park Skate Park.

"Some sort of action needs to address what's happened," Dickinson Parks and Recreation Director James Kramer said.

The ramps at the skate park have again been defaced with offensive graffiti and other destructive vandalism. In the past, garbage has been strewn about the park, thrown into the river and even lit on fire.

"The park had experienced vandalism before," Kramer said. "But the bulk of the vandalism started when the skate park was put in."

Kramer also stated it cannot be determined whether or not the damage has been done by the skaters themselves, or by others who do not use the skating ramps.

"This has been a problem for a long time," park board President Mike Lefor said. "The right course is to allow the public's input."

The commissioners Friday morning discussed options for action from closing the park temporarily, to increasing security, to relocating the skating ramp.
