R. Cameron Gillund, 84, Palm Desert, Calif., died April 17, 2007.

Cameron was born Aug. 17, 2007. He served in the army in WWII and was stationed in Germany. He received an AA degree from Long Beach Junior College and a B.S., master and doctorate degrees from the University of North Dakota.

His career was devoted to North Dakota education where he started as a teacher, basketball coach and principal in Wildrose.

In 1957, he and his family moved to Valley City, where he taught and coached at Valley City State University and later served as vice president.

In 1969, he became president of Dickinson State University where he served until he retired in 1977 to Palm Desert, Calif.

He and his wife, Gerry, enjoyed many happy summers at their cottage on Lake Melissa, Detroit Lakes, Minn. He spent his last 29 years of his life loving his family and watching the grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow.

He is survived by his wife, Gerry; children, Dennis (Barbara), Apple Valley, Minn., Douglas (Carole), La Quinta, Calif., Gerri (James) Twomey, Phoenix; brother Wendell (Kitty), Naples, Fla.; three grandchildren, Tom, Jon and Kelli; six great-grandchildren, Holly, Brett, Blake, Courtney, Jenna and Carely; and three step-grandchildren, Jon, Andrea and Todd.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Clara Gillund,
