BISMARCK (AP) -- A registered sex offender convicted of abusing a young child in the Dunseith area has been sentenced to 30 years in federal prison.

U.S. Attorney Timothy Purdon says 19-year-old Deven Poitra, of Dunseith, was sentenced to 30 years on a charge of aggravated sexual abuse of a child and 10 years for failing to update sex offender registration.

The sentences are to be served at the same time. Poitra will be on supervised release for 10 years following his time in prison. He also was ordered to pay $360 in restitution.

Authorities say Poitra sexually assaulted the child in a home on Dec. 20, 2009. A federal jury convicted him last July.
