The Badlands Chapter of Right to Life is sponsoring a seminar titled "Distorted View of Freedom" at 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 1, in the Trinity High School Auditorium.

"Basically, it's a seminar on our right to privacy," said member Jon Kary. "We will be touching on the connections between abortion, assisted suicide, stem cell research and same-sex unions."

The presenter is Janet E. Smith, professor of moral theology and chair of life ethics at the Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit. She also has taught at the University of Notre Dame and the University of Dallas. She was recently named Prolife Person of the Year by the Diocese of Dallas.

"She is amazing. She is so articulate and easy to follow, even on complex issues," said Badlands Chapter President Marlo Nelson. "She breaks everything down into an understandable format."

Nelson said the presenter will speak about the public's distorted views of freedom.

"A lot of people think we are free to be able to do whatever we choose, but we have ethical and moral responsibilities behind that freedom," she said.

The presentation is free and everyone is welcome.

"We wish to enlighten many people about this issue. It's definitely a community event," added Kary.

The Badlands Chapter seeks to promote human life from conception to natural death, said Nelson.

Toward that goal, the chapter promotes educational awareness of issues affecting life, informs voters on positions related to life issues, and provides support to women in crisis pregnancies, she said.

The Badlands Chapter won the "Chapter of the Year" award in 2008 from the North Dakota Right to Life.

"Being such a new chapter, that was pretty exciting for us," she said. "We received the award because we are so proactive, helping to educate and provide support to women in crisis pregnancies."

In conjunction with the seminar, Smith is offering a continuing education class for medical personnel from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Monday, March 2. Participants receive three credits on understanding bioethics. For more information, call Nelson at 701-290-0018.
