The Bronco drifted off the roadway into the north ditch. The driver attempted to bring the vehicle back onto the roadway, but overcorrected and lost control. The vehicle crossed the roadway and entered the south ditch. It began to roll and came to rest on the driver's side facing the northwest.

Both occupants were not wearing seatbelts and were ejected from the vehicle.

Garness was transported by ambulance to St. Joseph's Hospital and Health Center in Dickinson. He was later transferred to St. Alexius in Bismarck, according to a representative from St. Joseph's.

The vehicle was a total loss. Road conditions were reported as being normal and the weather was cloudy.

The crash remains under investigation by the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

Other responding agencies included the Dunn County Sheriff's Department, Killdeer Police Department and the Killdeer Ambulance.
